Osteoporosis and lactose intolerance
If you're lactose intolerant, it can be difficult to get enough calcium while
avoiding lactose, the sugar that is found in dairy products. However, a growing number of
options exist that can be added to your shopping cart. Lactose-reduced and lactose-free products
are available in great variety, including milk, cheese, and ice cream. Grocery and drug stores
offer special pills or liquids that can be taken before eating to help you digest dairy foods. You
can also choose foods that have calcium added (fortified), such as cereals and orange
juice, or add calcium supplements to your daily routine. Before shopping these alternatives,
consult with your doctor or nurse to determine which are best for you.
