Food labels: Good reading

The food labels required (US Food and Drug Administration) on packaged food items are a great way to know exactly what is contained inside—not just ingredients, but nutrients and other nutritional substances, calories and serving size, Daily Values (DV) in percentages, and more.

Knowing where to look, what to look for, and what the various parts of the food label mean can be invaluable toward your overall nutrition, food intake and diet as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Take a look at a typical food label from a package of macaroni and cheese (image courtesy of Food and Drug Administration). Note the numbers and color-coded areas (not usually on the food label) with descriptions and recommendations regarding how to read and use the label wisely.
